Step by Step Guide to Russian Visa Application

Being the largest country in the world—bigger than Pluto—having the world’s oldest and deepest freshwater lake, and home to traditional folk music, Russia has become one the most popular tourist destinations.

Magnificent architecture,  phenomenal ‘white nights’ and the second largest excavated holes in the world – the Mirny Diamond Mine, makes Russia captivating and alluring to tourists.

One of the frequently asked questions we get is, “How do I apply for Russian Visa?”

While the answer to that is not a simple one, there are steps you can take to secure a visit visa. Here is what you need to do to get a Russian travel visa:

Russia Visa Application

Step 1: Get an Invitation (Visa Support)

In order to get a Russian visa, you will need a support letter. You can get this online from your tour operator. Since there are different categories, your visa support letter will be handed to you, depending on the reason for your visitation and the duration of your trip.

Step 2: Get All Your Documents Ready

Once you have your visa support letter, make sure you have the following documents ready:

  • Russia Visa Application Form: You can get this from the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affair’s website. It will be able to guide you through the procedure and the form.

  • Travel Passport: Your travel passport should be valid for up till 6 months after your visit to Russia ends. Two clear blank pages are required on the passport; one for migration and one for the visa.

  • 2 Passport Sized Photographs: Your photographs should be passport size, with your ears showing and should be recent. The background should be white. Make sure you’re not smiling so that your features are distinguishable.

  • Health and Travel Insurance: It’s mandatory that you have health and travel insurance throughout your visit. You will need an HIV certificate if you’re travelling for business purposes, for a trip lasting 3 months. If you apply for a business trip, authorities require a letter from your employer, confirming you’re an employee of the company and are travelling for business purposes.

Step 3: Submit Your Application

The last step is the most important. You have to make sure you have all necessary documents. After that, you need to submit them to the Russian consulate. You can do this by yourself or can submit them through your tour operator.
